Orchestra audition schedule

When you submit an orchestra audition request, the music director will contact you to set up a convenient 15-minute audition time.

Health & Safety

This year, every student in the production must bring a face mask to every rehearsal. While we hope to rehearse unmasked as often as possible, the producer will determine whether the company is required to wear masks based on the current risk level of the community and surrounding communities. Participants will also be required to make frequent use of hand sanitizer.

Instruments needed

• Acoustic Bass, Electric Bass
• Drum Kit, Mark Tree, Tambourine, Timbales, Typewriter Pad, Various Percussion
• Electric Guitar, Electric w/ Slide, Hollow Body Electric, Mandolin, Nylon Acoustic Guitar, Round Neck Dobro, Telecaster, Acoustic Guitar
• Keyboard
• Alto Sax, Bari Sax, Tenor Sax, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo
• Trombone
• Trumpet, Flugelhorn

Doubling of some of the instruments is ideal.

What to expect at the audition

Bring two contrasting selections from your solo repertoire (exercises do not count as selections). Where possible, choose  material  that highlights an understanding of style and/or demonstrates your ability to navigate groove changes. You’ll be asked to play all or portions of each. You will also be given material to sight-read. The audition will take approximately 15 minutes. Please note that this music requires a rather high degree of expertise (as do all Broadway musical scores). If you are still in the beginning stages of learning your instrument, it would be wise to wait until you are more experienced before you audition.

What to expect if you are selected

You will need to attend all (or most) orchestra rehearsals (the schedule is not very demanding) and all performances.  This is a great opportunity to perform for full, enthusiastic audiences at the Victoria Theatre with only modest time commitment. The experience is rewarding and will compliment other instrumental opportunities.

Location of the auditions

The Muse Machine third floor studio in the Metropolitan Arts Center (next to the Victoria Theatre near the corner of First and Main Streets); 126 North Main Street, Dayton, Ohio 45402. The sign over the entrance says “The Loft” (for The Loft theatre, which is also in our building). The music director may make arrangements to meet you in a different location to accommodate challenging instrument transportation (drum kit, etc).
