Young Cast Rehearsal Schedule 9 to 5

Please Note

• It may be convenient to bookmark musemachine.com/backstage on your device. Tapping a month’s name on the right will auto-scroll you to that month. Some find it helpful to print this schedule and highlight their days. Remember that updates to the online schedule will occur throughout the rehearsal period, so printed version may become outdated.

• If updates are made to this schedule, you will be notified via voice message, the change will initially appear on the top of the Backstage page and the changes will appear in green on this schedule. Currently, notes of interest appear in red.

• This schedule is for grades 2-7 (the “Young Cast”). Although there is some overlap, the older performers (grades 8-12) have a separate schedule for “Cast”.

• Parents may wait on the third floor during rehearsals or may pick up their kids in front of the building (next to the Victoria Theatre, beneath “The Loft” sign). Adults will always escort the group to the third floor to be united with parents who are waiting there — and then will escort the remaining kids to the sidewalk in front of the building and wait with them until we see that each has been picked up by their family. Please be prompt when picking up your children.

Rehearsal Schedule 9 to 5

• This schedule is for grades 8-12 (the “Cast”). Although there is some overlap, the younger performers (grades 2-7) have a separate schedule for “Young Cast”.

• “AIS2” means Act One, Scene Two; “AIIS3” means Act Two, Scene Three, and so on.

• Song titles appear in italic type.

• Cast members required at each rehearsal appear in (parenthesis). If you need to attend a particular rehearsal, you will be mentioned in that list, either by name or by group, such as “Around Here performers.” Song groups like that were mentioned in your casting letter. “Tutti” means all cast members (gr 8-12) attend).

• When a specific character is listed, both the principal and understudy actors for that role should attend rehearsal.

• On several days throughout the rehearsal period, we will be “dark” – meaning no rehearsal. There are also breaks for Thanksgiving and late December.

• If a day simply indicates “Rehearsal” without specifying a scene or song, this indicates a complete run-through of the show (these begin in December).

• For speaking characters, be very familiar with your scene the first time it is rehearsed. The second time any scene appears on the schedule, you should be essentially off-book (memorized) for that scene.

• We will shoot two video pieces during our rehearsal period, which incorporate the entire older cast. These appear as “Video 1” and “Promo Video” on the schedule.

While all students in Muse Machine secondary schools are exposed to the arts through the In-School program, Muse club members have exciting additional opportunities to get involved by attending Out-of-School performances and participating in workshops and special projects. Recruiting members is a huge job and providing high-quality experiences for these members is a yearly challenge for our club advisors.

A Gothic Aria

Muse Machine 2022 Summer Institute-Inspired Lesson Plan
Developed by Rebecca Templeton
Kettering Fairmont High School, Kettering, OH
English Language Arts
Grade Level: 12

Lesson Plan Summary:

Many teachers introduce characteristics of literary genres through definitions, which students memorize and often forget shortly after the unit test. To increase student understanding and retention of elements of the Gothic genre, Rebecca Templeton from Kettering Fairmont High School utilized tableau, learned through the 2022 Summer Institute Mythology and Metamorphosis: Enduring Transformational Journeys. Tableau is defined as a striking or artistic grouping, so Rebecca asked students to create tableaus or “frozen picture” for each characteristic of Gothic literature. By incorporating movement and images, student groups created a visual memory, one image that defined the essence of the term. And because they were so dramatically entertaining, students will remember them for a very long time.

Finding An Emotional Connection to Choral Repertoire

Muse Machine 2022 Summer Institute-Inspired Lesson Plan
Developed by Lara Wolford
Bethel High School, Tipp City, OH
Fine Arts
Grade Level: 9-12

Lesson Plan Summary:

Any listener can tell when a singer has a personal connection to the piece being sung. Without it, the piece seems rote, emotionless and less powerful. That’s why choir teacher Lara Wolford created a lesson to bring meaning to every choral piece she assigned to her students. As a result of attending Muse Machine’s Summer Institute Mythology and Metamorphosis: Enduring Transformational Journeys, Lara was inspired to use lyrical analysis to help students form a more personal connection to a performance piece. Through a Mad Lib activity and pre and post recordings, Lara demonstrated to her students how their performance improved by tying the lyrics to something they valued.

Textual Clues and Content Through Tableau

Muse Machine 2022 Summer Institute-Inspired Lesson Plan
Developed by Darren McGarvey
Kettering Fairmont High School, Kettering, OH
English Language Arts | Fine Arts
Grade Level: 9-12

Lesson Plan Summary:

Understanding difficult literature is a daily task for Language Arts teachers at every grade level. One tool to help with this is tableau, an approach utilized during the 2022 Summer Institute Mythology and Metamorphosis: Enduring Transformational Journeys. As a teacher of Shakespeare, Darren McGarvey from Kettering Fairmont High School knows his text is difficult at any level, but especially for students new to iambic pentameter. Therefore, to reduce frustration and increase understanding, Darren utilized tableau to help students dissect and decipher the lines of an essential scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. By creating frozen depictions of essential meaning, this lesson requires students to demonstrate their understanding – or lack of – complicated passages and can be adapted for any piece of literature in any classroom.

Using Tableau to Explore “The Crucible”

Muse Machine 2022 Summer Institute-Inspired Lesson Plan
Developed by Austin Litteral
Tecumseh High School, New Carlisle, OH
English Language Arts
Grade Level: 11

Playwrights use dialogue and staging to illustrate conflict, but when reading scripts in a Language Arts classroom, the visual is lost. To help students better understand the characters and conflicts in The Crucible, Austin Litteral of Tecumseh High School used a tableau skill he learned through the 2022 Summer Institute Mythology and Metamorphosis: Enduring Transformational Journeys. In this lesson, student groups analyze how positioning, proximity and gestures can indicate power and relationships. Through each tableau, students better understand the nuances between the characters in Act I of The Crucible. Because these “snapshots” visually indicate accurate or inaccurate understanding of the scenes and the conflicts, this tableau technique offers a powerful check on understanding that can be adapted to any script or text.

Exploring Theme and Character Through Adaptation

Muse Machine 2022 Summer Institute-Inspired Lesson Plan
Developed by Ryan Lamb
Kettering Fairmont High School, Kettering, OH
Fine Arts
Grade Level: 12

What makes some literature timeless such that a story is rewritten and retold forever? From Cinderella to Romeo and Juliet, some stories are adapted over and over offering more relevance, relatability and personal connections for current readers. Ryan Lamb of Kettering Fairmont High School was inspired by the discussion of operatic adaptation at the 2022 Summer Institute Mythology and Metamorphosis: Enduring Transformational Journeys. This lesson shows how Ryan asked his students to analyze The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz and Wicked to discover how the author’s use of tone, lyrics, style, mood and themes of songs changed the meaning of a single story. Students then created an adaptation plan of their own and wrote the lyrics to one key song from their production. These songs offer strong opportunities for student voices to express modern issues.
